Best 4x4 Rentals for a Maasai Mara Safari (2026)
For a self-drive safari to Maasai Mara, the right vehicle is a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, a Toyota Hilux Surf or a Mitsubishi Pajero — all in 4WD, all with high ground clearance. Daily rates start around KES 12,000 and you should budget at least KES 95,000 for a 3-day Mara trip including fuel, park fees and insurance. Avoid soft-roader SUVs (RAV4, X-Trail) for the park interior — they will get stuck on the black-cotton roads.
What you actually need from a Mara 4x4
Maasai Mara has two terrain types: the access road from Narok (paved, then graded murram) and the park interior (mostly black-cotton soil that turns to clay when wet). The access road is fine in any SUV. The park interior demands real 4WD with locking diffs, 200mm+ ground clearance, and proper off-road tyres.
Recommended vehicles
These are the 4x4s consistently rented for Mara on ICABS:
- Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (J120 / J150) — gold standard. KES 15,000–22,000/day.
- Toyota Hilux Surf — older but bulletproof. KES 12,000–16,000/day.
- Mitsubishi Pajero (Sport or full-size) — capable, slightly thirstier. KES 13,000–17,000/day.
- Toyota Land Cruiser 70 / 76 series (safari spec) — the photographer's choice. KES 18,000–25,000/day.
What NOT to take
Avoid soft-roader SUVs and crossovers: Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester. They have AWD, not 4WD, and ground clearance under 200mm — they will scrape, get stuck, and many park lodges won't escort recovery for them. Sedans are a non-starter.

Frequently asked
Can I drive a 2WD into Maasai Mara?
Technically yes during the dry season (June–October) on the main game-drive tracks, but most lodges will not escort recovery for a 2WD that gets stuck. We strongly recommend a real 4WD.
How long is the drive from Nairobi to Maasai Mara?
Around 5–6 hours via Narok in a 4x4. The last 80 km after Narok is rough and slow — leave Nairobi by 7am to arrive before dark.
Are roof tents available?
Yes — several ICABS owners list 4x4s with roof tents and bush-camping kits. Filter for 'roof tent' or 'safari spec' on the rentals page.
