Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to rent a car in Kenya?
Daily rates on ICABS start from around KES 2,500 for Economy vehicles, KES 4,500 for Standard sedans, KES 7,500 for Premium and SUVs, and KES 12,000+ for Vans and luxury vehicles. Weekly and monthly rentals are discounted via tiered pricing.
Do I need a deposit to rent a car?
Yes. Most ICABS owners require a refundable deposit, typically between KES 5,000 and KES 30,000 depending on the vehicle category. The deposit is shown on each vehicle's detail page and refunded after a clean return.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Kenya?
Renters must be at least 23 years old with a valid driving licence held for a minimum of 2 years. Some Premium and SUV listings require 25+ and 3+ years of driving experience.
What documents do I need to rent a car?
A valid Kenyan driving licence (or international driving permit for foreign visitors), a national ID or passport, and a verified ICABS customer account. Documents are uploaded once during sign-up and re-used for future bookings.
Can I rent a car with a driver (chauffeur)?
Yes — many ICABS listings offer both self-drive and driver-included options. Look for the 'Driver available' badge on a vehicle's detail page. Driver fees are billed separately from the daily rate.
Is there a mileage limit?
Each vehicle has its own mileage policy. Most listings include 100–250 km per day; additional kilometres are charged at the per-km overage rate shown on the vehicle's detail page.
What happens if the car has an accident or breaks down?
All ICABS rentals include basic third-party cover and 24/7 in-app support. Renters are liable for the deductible/excess up to the deposit amount. Comprehensive cover can be added at booking.
Can I drive the rental car outside Kenya?
Cross-border travel (Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda) requires explicit owner approval and additional COMESA insurance. Request approval from the owner via in-app chat before crossing.
Where do I pick up and drop off the car?
Pickup is arranged with the vehicle owner — most rentals include free pickup at the listed location, JKIA, or anywhere within the listed county. Door-to-door delivery is available on selected vehicles.
Can I book on my phone?
Yes — book on the website at icabs.co.ke/rentals or download the ICABS mobile app for Android and iOS for the full booking experience including in-app chat with the owner.
