Mombasa to Nairobi by Car — The Honest Road Trip Guide
Mombasa to Nairobi by car is roughly 480 km via the A8 highway and takes 7–8 hours of pure driving — plan for 9–10 hours total with fuel and food stops. Tolls on the Nairobi Expressway are KES 350–1,800 depending on entry point. Total fuel cost in a Standard sedan is around KES 6,500. Leave Mombasa by 6 AM to clear Nairobi traffic before evening rush hour. The drive is safe, scenic, and one of the best ways to see Kenya — Tsavo East lies along your right shoulder for 200 km.
The route at a glance
The A8 (Mombasa Road) is now a near-continuous dual carriageway from Mombasa through Voi, Mtito Andei, Sultan Hamud, Athi River, and into Nairobi. Past Athi River you join the Nairobi Expressway for the final 27 km — pay the toll and skip the worst of the traffic.
Recommended stops
The route has three big stop towns and several quick-pit options:
- Voi (160 km) — first major stop. Total/Shell stations, Tsavo Inn for breakfast.
- Mtito Andei (240 km) — halfway. Watering hole for trucks; quick stop only.
- Sultan Hamud (340 km) — last good stop before Nairobi traffic. Total + restaurants.
- Salama / Konza (380 km) — coffee + bathroom break.
- Athi River (450 km) — Nairobi Expressway entry; toll booth.
Common scams to watch for
The A8 is mostly safe but a few patterns recur:
- "Rope across the road" near Tsavo: ignore. These are unauthorised. Drive past the official police checkpoints only.
- Tyre puncture "helpers" in remote areas: drive to the next petrol station.
- Police suggesting fines without receipts: insist on the police station route. Never pay roadside.
- Curio sellers near Voi pretending to be "the only authentic" — there are many. Buy if you want, decline if you don't.

Most ICABS owners allow round-trip Mombasa–Nairobi rentals at no surcharge if pickup and drop-off are the same county. One-way (pick up Mombasa, drop in Nairobi) is possible but typically attracts a KES 8,000–15,000 relocation fee. Confirm both with the owner via in-app chat before booking.
