Hidden Costs of Car Rental in Kenya — What to Watch For
The advertised daily rate on a Kenya rental is rarely the final price. The seven costs that surprise first-time renters are: mileage overages (KES 30–120/km after the cap), fuel-policy mismatches (full-to-full vs full-to-empty), deposit holds (KES 5,000–30,000 frozen for 24–48 hours after return), late return fees (often a full extra day), cleaning charges (KES 1,500–5,000), additional driver fees (KES 500/day), and cross-county or cross-border surcharges. ICABS displays mileage cap, deposit and fuel policy on every listing — read them before booking.
The 7 hidden costs to watch
Each one is small individually but they stack:
1. Mileage overages
Most rentals include 100–250 km/day. Drive past the cap and the overage rate kicks in — typically KES 30/km on Economy, KES 120/km on Premium SUVs. A 400 km Sunday drive on a 200 km/day cap = 200 km overage = KES 6,000–24,000 depending on category. Always check the cap on the listing and ask the owner about a higher cap if you'll exceed it.
2. Fuel policy
ICABS is full-to-full: pick up with a full tank, return full. If you return less than full, the owner refuels and charges you the cost plus a small handling fee. Avoid "full-to-empty" arrangements (you pay for a full tank up front, return at any level) — they always overcharge unless you hit empty exactly.
3. Deposit holds
Refundable deposits are held against your card for 24–48 hours after a clean return. Banks display the held amount as a debit, which can confuse first-time renters. The deposit is released, not charged — but the visible "hold" can dent your available balance. Plan for this if you're on a tight budget.
4. Late return fees
Most owners give a 1-hour grace period; beyond that you're charged a full extra day. If you'll be late, message the owner before the deadline — most will extend without penalty if the next renter isn't waiting.
5. Cleaning fees
Normal use (some dust, mild interior dirt) is fine. Excessive use — sand from beach trips, mud from off-road, food spills, smoking — attracts a cleaning fee of KES 1,500–5,000. Vacuum the interior and wipe down the dashboard before returning to avoid this.
6. Additional driver fees
If a second person will drive the vehicle, register them at booking — KES 500/day on most listings. Driving with an unregistered driver invalidates the insurance and may forfeit your deposit if there's an incident.
7. Cross-county and cross-border surcharges
Most ICABS rentals allow cross-county travel within Kenya at no extra cost. Cross-border (Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda) requires owner approval and COMESA insurance — expect KES 5,000–15,000 in additional charges plus the insurance premium.
Frequently asked
How can I see all fees upfront on ICABS?
Every listing shows the daily rate, deposit, mileage cap, fuel policy and overage rate on the vehicle detail page. The booking summary at checkout itemises every charge before you confirm.
Do ICABS prices include VAT?
Yes — all displayed prices are inclusive of VAT and platform fees. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay.
What if I'm charged a fee I don't recognise?
Open a dispute via in-app support within 7 days of return. ICABS reviews the case with both parties and refunds unjustified charges to your wallet or card.
