Long-Term Car Rental in Kenya — Monthly & Quarterly Rates

Long-term car rental in Kenya is roughly 25–40% cheaper per day than daily hire. A Standard sedan that costs KES 4,500/day on a 3-day rental drops to about KES 3,200/day on a 30-day rental and KES 2,800/day on a 90-day deal. ICABS uses tiered pricing — the rate auto-discounts the moment you book 7+ or 30+ days. Long-term rentals suit expats settling in, NGO staff on multi-month placements, contract workers, and anyone whose own car is in extended repair.

How tiered pricing works

Every ICABS listing has up to three tiers: short (1–6 days), weekly (7–29 days), and monthly (30+ days). The system applies the cheapest matching tier automatically — you don't haggle. A KES 4,500/day Standard sedan typically tiers to KES 3,200/day at 7+ days and KES 2,800/day at 30+ days.

Who long-term rentals suit

The best fit is anyone needing a car for 30+ days where buying doesn't make sense:

  • Expats settling in Nairobi for a 6–24-month posting.
  • NGO and UN staff on contract placements.
  • Project-based engineers, geologists, consultants travelling between Nairobi and field sites.
  • Insurance customers whose own vehicle is in extended repair.
  • Diplomatic staff awaiting their personal vehicle to clear customs.

What's included vs add-on

Long-term rentals include the same baseline as short rentals — third-party insurance, mileage allowance, basic maintenance — but are usually negotiated to include extras at no charge. Common inclusions:

  • Free swap-out vehicle if the primary vehicle needs servicing (most owners with multiple cars).
  • Roadside assistance (24/7).
  • Comprehensive insurance — usually a paid add-on, KES 18,000–35,000 per month.
  • Driver service — KES 60,000–90,000 per month for full-time chauffeur.

How to negotiate a better rate

Message the owner via in-app chat BEFORE booking. State the duration, paint a picture ("6-month NGO placement, predictable use, garaged at compound"). Owners trust low-risk renters and many will further discount the monthly rate by 5–10%. Pay quarterly upfront for an additional 5–10%.

Frequently asked

Can I switch vehicles partway through a long-term rental?

Yes — many ICABS owners with fleets allow mid-rental swaps for similar-category vehicles. Useful if your needs change or the primary vehicle needs servicing.

Does insurance cover business use?

Standard third-party cover applies for personal use. NGO, ride-share or commercial use usually requires a comprehensive policy add-on. Disclose the use to the owner upfront.

What about routine maintenance and tyre wear?

Routine maintenance (oil changes, brake pads) and normal tyre wear are the owner's responsibility on long-term rentals. Damage from misuse is the renter's responsibility.
