How Much Does It Cost to Hire an SUV in Kenya?

Hiring an SUV in Kenya costs from around KES 6,000/day for a compact crossover (Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail), KES 8,000–12,000/day for a mid-size 4x4 (Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero), and KES 15,000–25,000/day for a full-size safari 4x4 (Land Cruiser Prado, LC 76). Weekly and monthly rentals cut 15–35% off the per-day price, refundable deposits run KES 15,000–40,000, and most ICABS owners throw in free pickup at JKIA, Wilson or your hotel. Fuel is on you — budget an extra KES 2,000–4,000/day of driving.

SUV rates by size class

Not every 'SUV' costs the same in Kenya — the price gap between a soft-roader and a full safari 4x4 is huge. ICABS groups them into three practical classes, priced on capability and fuel appetite. The table below shows current market rates as of July 2026.

Which SUV class do you actually need?

Match the vehicle to the trip and you avoid overpaying. A compact crossover is perfect for tarmac and light gravel; a full-size 4x4 is only worth the premium if you're going deep into a park.

  • Compact crossover (RAV4, X-Trail, CR-V) — city, tarmac road trips, light gravel. AWD, not true 4WD.
  • Mid-size 4x4 (Fortuner, Pajero Sport, Prado J120) — the all-rounder. Handles Mara access roads, family safaris, murram.
  • Full-size safari 4x4 (Prado J150, LC 76/79, Hilux Surf) — deep-park terrain, black-cotton mud, roof-tent expeditions.
  • If you're staying on tarmac, do NOT pay Land Cruiser money — a crossover does the job for half the price.

What's included in the daily rate

The headline SUV rate on ICABS includes basic third-party insurance, a daily mileage allowance (usually 150–250 km), and free pickup within a set radius — often the whole of Nairobi plus JKIA. It does not include fuel (full-to-full policy), comprehensive cover, an additional driver, or park entry fees. On a safari-spec 4x4, comprehensive insurance is strongly recommended given where the vehicle goes.

  • Third-party insurance — included
  • Mileage allowance (150–250 km/day) — included up to the cap
  • JKIA / Wilson / hotel pickup — usually free
  • Fuel — not included; full-to-full
  • Comprehensive cover — add-on, KES 1,200–3,000/day on 4x4s
  • Additional driver — KES 500/day on most listings

Deposits and fuel — the numbers to plan for

SUV deposits are higher than for sedans because the vehicles are worth more. Expect KES 15,000–20,000 on a compact crossover, KES 25,000–30,000 on a mid-size 4x4, and KES 30,000–40,000 on a full-size safari vehicle. The deposit is held against damage or excess mileage and refunded 24–48 hours after a clean return.

Fuel is the cost most people underestimate. A Prado does roughly 8–10 km per litre on murram; at KES 200/litre that's about KES 20/km. A 3-day Mara trip covering 900 km will burn KES 18,000–22,000 in diesel alone — often more than one day of the rental itself.

How to hire an SUV for less

Book 7+ or 30+ days and ICABS auto-applies the weekly or monthly tier — no haggling. Pick a well-reviewed compact crossover over a flashy 4x4 if your route is tarmac. Message the owner before booking to confirm the mileage cap and whether cross-county travel to the parks is included; that single conversation prevents most overage surprises. Pay with M-Pesa or card in-app so every charge is itemised at checkout.

Frequently asked

How much does it cost to hire an SUV in Kenya per day?

From about KES 6,000/day for a compact crossover, KES 8,000–12,000/day for a mid-size 4x4, and KES 15,000–25,000/day for a full-size safari 4x4. Weekly and monthly rentals are 15–35% cheaper per day.

Is a compact SUV enough for a Kenyan safari?

For tarmac access and the dry-season main tracks, a compact crossover can cope. But inside parks like Maasai Mara the black-cotton roads demand a true 4WD with high clearance — hire a mid-size or full-size 4x4 to avoid getting stuck.

Do I pay for fuel on top of the SUV hire rate?

Yes. ICABS uses a full-to-full fuel policy — you collect the vehicle full and return it full. Budget KES 20/km of driving on a big 4x4, which can add up fast on long safari routes.

Can I hire an SUV with a driver?

Yes — most ICABS SUV listings offer both self-drive and chauffeured options. A driver adds roughly KES 2,500–4,000/day plus a KES 1,000/day overnight allowance if travelling outside Nairobi.
